Abstract
Abstract Diabetes mellitus is a major world-wide health problem which is considered a social disease not only because of its high prevalence but also of its elevated economic costs. In the last years, there has been an increasing interest concerning psychosocial aspects and quality of life in patients with chronic diseases, particularly in those with diabetes. Treatment approach requires an understanding of the social, psychological, and psychiatric ramifications of type 1 diabetes mellitus in order to reach the goal of promoting the patients well-being while preventing complications. In the present paper the authors make a review of the psychosocial adjustment to diabetes mellitus through different pediatric age stages: infant and preschool, childhood and adolescence.
