Abstract

Seventy one pediatric patients, from 12 months to 12 years old, suffering acute pharyngo-tonsillitis were studied. They were divided in 2 groups: The group I (36 cases) was treated with diacetylmidecamycin and the group II (35 cases) received erytromycin ethylsuccinate; in both groups the doses were 50 mg/k/d twice daily during 7 days. In the group I the clinical improvement was achieved in the 97,2 % of children and the bacteria eradicated in the 83,3 % of the cases. Meanwhile, in the group II the percentages were 91,4 % and 77,1 % respectively, not being significant these differences. The diacetylmidecamycin was the best tolerated antibiotic; the general toleration was optimum in all cases and the gastrointestinal toleration in 91,7 % of patients in group I versus 74,5 % of group II (p<0.05). Our resuIts support the election of diacetylmidecamycin for treatment of pediatric pharyngo-tonsilltis because its better tolerance.
