Abstract
In recent years the physicians study have focused increasing attention on the study of trace elements basically in the nutritional management of medical and surgical conditions. Of particular concern is the very low birth weigth infant, who in addition to reduced body metal stores when compared to that of the full term infant - will probably have impaired metal matabolism. These infants often require total parenteral nutrition until enteral feeding can be established. In this chapter we intend to describe the current knowledge of trace metal metabolism in the fetus and neonate, as well as the requirements during parenteral nutrition, and enteral feeding.
