Abstract

We refer 418 neonatal sepsis followed from 1 of January of 1976 and 31 of december of 1985. To evaluate the evolution of frequency, etiology and mortality rate, the results are compared in two consecutive periods of 5 years. The incidence in the first period was 9,16 % of hospitalized and 7,04 %o of newborns, being in the second one of 6,05 % of hospitalized and 5,52 ‰ newborns. In both periods the predominant flora was Gram-negative (76,6 % and 64,7 % respectively), and Klebsiella the most isolated germ. In the second period a remarkable increment of precocious sepsis was observed, so as Gram-positive bacteria, specially beta-hemolitic streptococcus Group B and coagulasa negative staphylococcus. The mortality rate was similar in borth periods, remarking the low rate associated to precocious sepsis (20 %), quite less than other author references.
