Abstract
The fibronectin (FN) is a glycoprotein that are present, as an insoluble form, on many surfaces cells, basement membranes, connective tissues and, as a soluble form, on extracellular fluids. Recently, it has been reason for attention in medical publications. FN interacts in binding phenomena with several molecules and cells. It has functions in healing of wounds, clotting, opsonization and phagocytosis. FN levels are decreased in trauma, burns surgery, hepatic and renal failure and sepsis; and increased in several tumors and vascular diseases. It is discussed whether FN therapy can improve the prognosis of some diseases, mainly severe infections, by means of its participation on phagocytosis mechanisms.
