Abstract

Extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy has changed the treatment of urinary calculous disease. It is a non-invasive method of managing even complex stones in children, irrespective of both calculous size or location. Stone clearance rates of up to 70 % are achieved with minimal morbidity, although the long-term effects on the kidney are unknown. Therefore, lithotripsy is probably the treatment of choice for nephrolithiasis in children. Succesfil lithotripsy was performed in three children between 11 and 14 years old with calculi of the upper urinary tracto No major complications were found.
