Abstract

Twenty five cases of intussusception, admitted from January 1983 to November 1992, were revised, in retrospect. The average age of patients was 11,8 months and in 76 % of the cases, the disease was suffered by children under twelve months. The 52 % were males. The 24 % had been appointed to a consultancy and only one case went was sent with a precise diagnosis. In one of the nineteen cases that directly came to the hospital, It wasn't made a diagnosis at the admission.
The most frequent symtoms were: Vomiting (84 %), abdominal pain (64 %) and hematochezia (44 %). Two infants had as initial symptons: apathy, paleness, irritation and confusion.
In all cases was made a barytee enema. The reduction was successful in 64 % of the patients that showed the first episode, and in those cases whose evolution was Iess than twelve hours the reduction was successfull in 81.3 % 13 of the patients. Thirteen children needed surgical procedures and in three of then was f&nd associated pathology. There were two cases of hypothonics dehydratation one of them with hypocalcemie tetanyc. There were no mortal cases. The average stay of patients in hospital was five days.
