Abstract
Abstract Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is one of the most frequently diagnosed problems in childhood. Its association with urine infections and possible secondary renal lesions explain its importance. We present the present day etiopathogenic knowledge on reflux nephropathy and review the diagnostic tests that should be performed in patients with suspicion of VUR. There are several therapeutic options. The possibility of spontaneous remission of VUR justifies prolonged antibiotic prophylaxis. The most frequent indications for surgical treatment are persistence of reflux in spite of medical treatment and high grade VURs. We review the indications of the endoscopic treatment, which has become an alternative therapeutic option to surgical and medical treatment with a high rate of success.
