Abstract
Abstract After stressing the incidence and prevalence of epilepsy, assessment is made of the factors that presently modulate its chronic treatment, with which quality of life of the children and adolescents with epilepsy has noticeably improved and it is possible to eliminate the seizures and consider the disease cured in many cases. The premises to initiate epilepsy treatment, the factors that modulate the choice of the specific drug, the advantages and disadvantages of each one of the epilepsy drugs sold, the drug administration schedule, the information that should be provided to the patient and family members, frequency and characteristics of the controls during the chronic treatment and attitude on evaluating the elimination of the medication are assessed. All these aspects have changed so greatly in recent years that epilepsy can now be considered a chronic disease with which the subject can and should carry out a normal life, and it will be possible to eliminate treatment in the long run in most of the cases.
