Resumen
La reciente creación de la especialidad de Psiquiatría de la Infancia y la Adolescencia responde a un aumento creciente en cuanto a conocimientos sobre la salud mental infantojuvenil, y también al ascenso significativo de la prevalencia de diferentes trastornos y patologías psiquiátricas en este grupo de edad.
Por ello, a continuación se desarrolla una revisión sobre conceptos básicos acerca de neurotransmisión y psicofármacos más frecuentemente utilizados, describiendo su potencial uso, efectos adversos más frecuentes, consideraciones y conclusiones al respecto.
Con este texto, se pretende permitir a los pediatras tanto de atención primaria como de ámbito hospitalario emplear este tipo de medicaciones, aportando una evidencia sólida y una mayor seguridad en cuanto a la asistencia a pacientes psiquiátricos.
